Getting Started with Performance Support
In our last L&D post, we shared a couple of important things required for getting started with eLearning. Because we know that eLearning is just one of many tools in the L&D toolbox, we wanted to follow up with a bit about getting started with performance support this time.
What exactly is performance support?
Performance support is used to help people apply skills and knowledge, solve problems, and complete tasks that require access to additional information and/or step-by-step procedures. Performance support usually delivered via performance support tools. There are several types of performance support tools including:
Quick Reference Guides
Infographics
Process Maps
Mobile Apps
eBooks/Interactive PDFs
How-To-Videos
FAQs
Checklists
Learning Portals
Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS)
In short, performance support is giving people access to the information they need to do their jobs efficiently and effectively.
Benefits of Performance Support
Performance support helps L&D teams optimize the information they are providing to get the right info, to the right people at the right time in the right place.
Common benefits of a PS program include:
Empowering staff: Enable learners to manage things on their own.
Saving time: Enable learners to quickly zero in on the required information.
Better application of knowledge: Since performance support materials are are designed to meet a specific need, they are easier to use and apply.
Providing just-in-time updates: These could include new features, upgrades, or change management.
Of course, establishing a performance support program doesn't happen overnight. It requires a well-thought strategy along with a robust knowledge base and tools that deliver content that is relevant, up-to-date, compact, easy to access, and quick to utilize.
